Creating Startup Universities

How is your university promoting innovation and entrepreneurship?

Jon Brumley Texas Venture Labs

The Jon Brumley Texas Venture Labs houses the TVL Accelerator which partners graduate students from The University of Texas at Austin studying Business, Law, Engineering and the Sciences with start-ups to solve fundamental business problems.

In three years, the TVL Accelerator has worked with 53 companies and 144 students. Our companies have raised over $45 million and two out of three students go on to either found or work at a start-up.

This model could likely be duplicated at other major universities to similar effect

TVL is hands down one of the best cross-disciplinary offerings available to graduate students at UT. You get to interact with the best professors in the classroom and then apply it to the real world as you work with startups in Austin. It is one of the primary reasons I came back to receive an MBA and my participation in TVL has now ratified my decision to come to UT.

As an engineer participating in TVL I get to collaborate with talented students from across the UT campus on solving real problems affecting startups. The program has cultivated my passions for entrepreneurship and I hope to apply the knowledge gained in a startup of my own soon.

As an MBA, I get to act as a consultant for local startups. It's challenging and exciting. It's great to see real changes based on my team's recommendations.

Texas Venture Labs is the best experience I've had thus far in the McCombs MBA program. Not only do we get to work with local entrepreneurs on a variety of projects, but have the ability to work with graduate students cross-departmentally. In the two years I have been here I have watched it grow and constantly improve!

TVL fosters a great environment for graduate students from all disciplines to develop an appreciation and understanding of the principles of entrepreneurship through engaging lectures and real-world application with local startups.

Texas Venture Labs is a huge asset to the University of Texas at Austin. It provides an opportunity for graduate students to gain practical and translation business skills. TVL fosters an enriching collaborative environment to connect graduate students and entrepreneurs. Great program!

TVL is the driving factor behind the University of Texas being one of the top entrepreneurship universities in the nation!
